UbiSoft confirms setting for Assassin’s Creed III

UbiSoft confirms setting for Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin’s Creed III will be set in Colonial America, according to purported promotional material for the game

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations wrapped up Ezio’s story, indicating the franchise would shift its focus to a new protagonist in Assassin’s Creed III, and is ‘coming to America’—not as an Eddie Murphy assassination of classic comedy, but as a deep narrative game that carries over the war between Assassins and Templars from the Old World to the New World right smack in the middle of the American Revolution.  Cover art for the new game released Thursday depicts an unnamed new lead character who takes up the mantle from Altaïr ibn-La’Ahad, the 12th century Palestinian Assassin who starred in the original Assassin’s Creed and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, and the 15th century Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore Da Firenze, featured in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Assassin’s Creed II, and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.
The image shows an Assassin’s Creed-looking hooded character wielding a tomahawk, arrows, and a gun in front of the Continental flag.

If you haven’t had much experience of the AC franchise, the central idea is that the experiences of these historical assassin’s are being re-lived by their 21st century descendent Desmond Miles, who in the year 2012 has been kidnapped by evil megacorp Abstergo Industries, owners of a technology called the Animus that can dredge up a person’s ancestral memories

Due for release on October 30th, 2012, it is still not entirely clear what secrets Ubisoft has install for all us hungry AC fans, however the cover art posted below is a pretty good hint that the new Assassin with cross paths with key figures of US State for the era  such as George Washington, Paul Revere, Ben Franklin, and the other leading American revolutionaries of the day.  We see him below striking with a tomahawk over a fallen British Redcoat with the old-time American flag waving in the background.

I find it very intriguing that have used some American Native Indian imagery in these pictures, so are they suggesting our new Assassin may have a tribal background, or perhaps an Army Officer who has been raised by a Native  American tribe and retained their influence?  The details of our new character’s clothes seems to show less of the fine Italian silks, and more of the tribal leathers from bear skins with feathers.  It will be interesting to see how the character develops, as UbiSoft reveal more later in the year.

Ubisoft have now released the box art for Assassin’s Creed III (pictured below), confirming rumors that the game will be set in Colonial America. The company also announced that it will officially unveil Assassin’s Creed III on March 5 at 5 p.m. PDT.
